UNESCO activities at Foshay junior high school and at Burroughs junior high school. [Reading, Globe, Art Exhibit] Taken for Visual education section, Mrs. Uphoff - Jan. 13, 1949. AVES No. 15570 UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is a specialized agency dedicated to strengthening our shared humanity through the promotion of education, science, culture, and communication. https://www.unesco.org/en/brief The art exhibit "Masterpieces from the Berlin Museums", toured 14 major American cities from 1948 to 1949, including Los Angeles. The exhibition was part of a nationwide tour organized by the U.S. Army after the paintings were initially brought to the United States in 1945 for safekeeping following World War II. The works, known as the "Berlin 202," were discovered in a salt mine near Merkers, Germany, in April 1945, along with 100 tons of Reichsbank gold. Although the U.S. government claimed the paintings were moved only for safekeeping, the decision sparked controversy, with the Monuments Men protesting what they viewed as a morally dubious act of "plunder". https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/americans-flocked-see-controversial-exhibit-berlins-art-treasures-wake-world-war-ii-180971677/ |
