Description |
The sculpture is a bas relief with a stylized depiction of Don Quixote on his horse. A line engraving of Sancho Panza is in the background. It is framed in a wood presentation box measuring 27" x 19" x 3". Dalí was particularly taken by, and perhaps related to, the story of Don Quixote, Cervantes’ idealistic Spanish nobleman who saw himself as a knight fighting the world’s injustices and serving the causes of truth and beauty. It has been said that Don Quixote’s quest was an allegory of the eternal search for goodness and truth in life, coupled with an idealism that sometimes viewed heroism and love as a form of insanity. There are two versions of this relief; one is bronze and measures 18-1/2 x 26-1/2 inches. It is framed in a wood frame measuring 28-1/4 x 35-3/4 inches. The other relief is made of platinum, measures 18-1/2 x 26-1/2 inches, and is enclosed in a wooden case which measures 23 x 30-1/2 x 4-3/4 inches. This relief, plus two in the collection at the LAUSD Art Archive Vault were donated to the LAUSD by Michael Agron on December 24, 2002. Description Modified: 7/28/2010 |
