Description |
Shallow footed bowl lacking handles with matching bowls inverted for lids, the under bowl black, the lids painted at front with a jeweled female profile bust wearing the kekryphalos, the back with palmettes, the discus of the knop with a rosette, cursory painted detail. The pyxis are constructed from two shallow, footed bowls placed on top of each other. The top bowls are decorated with two profile portraits of a woman with an elaborate hairstyle amid a pattern of stylized rosettes. The pyxis were part of the collection of Venice High School. According to an inventory conducted in 1988, the pyxis are "lady's toilet box(es) for powder. Almost the same shape as top is bottom…bottom all black glaze. Top is painted dull red. Pictures of two women's heads - one on each side. Arcanthus leaves between the two heads." The pyxis are #11 on the inventory list. Description Modified: 4/1/2011 |
