Description |
Ovoid ribbed body on disc foot, cylindrical neck with unglazed lip, lifting handles on either side and vertical pouring handle at back, the lip painted with grape clusters. The hydria has a large, teardrop-shaped body with three looped handles on the shoulder, and a circular rim, all on a small round foot. The hydria is decorated with ribs running the entire length of the body, and a band of grape leaves circles the outer edge of the rim. The piece was originally part of the collection of Venice High School. According to an inventory conducted in 1988, the piece is a "large black amphora (hydria) with vertical striations. Handle on each side. Top (mouth) repaired with white plaster. Lip has a leaf decoration…color black mildly glazed." The piece is #14 on the inventory list. Description Modified: 7/28/2010 |
