Originally the Army had broken ground in the middle of what had been the Pettit family's carrot and lima bean field on June 18th, 1943. The cost per acre, $600. Authorized by War Department General Order 48, 24 August 1943, this hospital as built as Van Nuys General Hospital in late 1943 and early 1944 to serve as both a general hospital and a debarkation hospital. Renamed in honor of Brigadier General Henry Patrick Birmingham, Medical Corps, U.S. Army (born 1854, died 1932). It received its first patient on 25 February 1944. Its stucco buildings had 1777 beds, of which 800 were devoted to debarkation activities. The hospital specialized in general medicine, central nervous system syphilis, rheumatic fever and psychiatry. The hospital had a small prisoner of war compound, until April 1st, 1946, when the grounds and buildings were transferred to the Veteran's Administration and was run as such until June 1st, 1950. In 1954, 80 acres were deeded to LAUSD for one dollar, under the condition that the Army could continue to use 37 acres; this acreage was used for training by an antiaircraft battalion until 1960. After that date, the school District acquired the remaining acreage of the property and added more campuses. Part of the former Birmingham Army Hospital facility was used as an air defense missile battalion headquarters from April 1956 to November 1968. The units located there during that timeframe were Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 551st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Missile Battalion, which was redesignated in September 1958 as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 65th Artillery. The Junior High-School would get the East and core of the grounds which consisted of 53 acres, bordered on two sides by Balboa Blvd and the later-to-be Victory Blvd. The Historical Marker Database; February 2, 2026.
