Description |
The oil on canvas painting is a portrait of John Burroughs. He is depicted as an old man with a long, white beard and wears a grey three-piece suit. It is framed in a gilded frame. The Pasadena Star News carried several stories about the making of the portrait, including articles appearing on Nov. 27, 1920 and Nov. 29, 1920. A photo of the artist standing beside the portrait was reproduced in the Pasadena Star News on Feb. 24, 1920. The portrait was on public view in the artist's studio until it was purchased by John Lewis Childs of Floral Park, NY,, a close friend of Burroughs. It was likely owned at one time by John Lewis Childs (1856-1921) of Floral Park, New York. Childs was a New York Senator and founded the first seed catalog business in the US. ABC’s hit comedy Happy Endings recently filmed and included a scene at John Burroughs Middle School in Hancock Park which featured Mannheim’s portrait of John Burroughs in the background. The episode first aired on October 5, 2011. The Burroughs portrait is featured on page 109 of Retizell’s From a Versatile Brush: The Lift and Art of Jean Mannheim. |
